Head gesture recognition for hands-free control of an intelligent wheelchair
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose – This paper presents a novel hands-free control system for intelligent wheelchairs (IWs) based on visual recognition of head gestures. Design/methodology/approach – A robust head gesture-based interface (HGI), is designed for head gesture recognition of the RoboChair user. The recognised gestures are used to generate motion control commands to the low-level DSP motion controller so that it can control the motion of the RoboChair according to the user’s intention. Adaboost face detection algorithm and Camshift object tracking algorithm are combined in our system to achieve accurate face detection, tracking and gesture recognition in real time. It is intended to be used as a human-friendly interface for elderly and disabled people to operate our intelligent wheelchair using their head gestures rather than their hands. Findings – This is an extremely useful system for the users who have restricted limb movements caused by some diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and quadriplegics. Practical implications – In this paper, a novel integrated approach to real-time face detection, tracking and gesture recognition is proposed, namely HGI. Originality/value – It is an useful human-robot interface for IWs.

A Novel Head Gesture Recognition Based Control for Intelligent Wheelchairs
To meet the challenges in today’s world of global computing, fast technologies, and increasingly old age population, the researchers have been trying to switch from traditional modes of navigation to automatically operated modes of navigation. This gives a level of independence in their daily activities inside the house without much effort. The demand for assistive navigation technologies to he...
متن کاملImplementation of an Intelligent Head Gesture Recognition System
As per the rapidly advancement in the changing technology, the numerous applications are required. For example, for face, hand and gesture recognition. The previous researchers have been developed various methods foe head gesture recognition and they presented various limitations. Therefore the paper proposes an FPGA based gesture recognition system. The gesture detection and gesture recognitio...
متن کاملHead movement and facial expression-based human-machine interface for controlling an intelligent wheelchair
This paper presents a human machine interface (HMI) for hands-free control of an electric powered wheelchair (EPW) based on head movements and facial expressions detected by using the gyroscope and ‘cognitiv suite’ of an Emotiv EPOC device, respectively. The proposed HMI provides two control modes: 1) control mode 1 uses four head movements to display in its graphical user interface the control...
متن کامل3D hand gesture tracking and recognition for controlling an intelligent wheelchair
Hand gesture recognition is a user-friendly and intuitive means for human machine interaction. This paper proposes a novel 3D hand gesture recognition method for controlling an intelligent wheelchair based on both colour and depth information. Image depth information of human palm is obtained by a 3D Kinect vision sensor and then its position is obtained through the hand analysis module in Open...
متن کاملPowered Wheelchair Control Using Acoustic-Based Recognition of Head Gesture Accompanying Speech
In this paper, we propose the novel interface for powered wheelchair control using the acoustic-based recognition of head gesture accompanying speech. A microphone array mounted on a wheelchair localizes the position of the user’s voice. Because the localized position of the user’s voice almost corresponds with that of the mouth, the tracking of the head movements accompanying speech can be ach...
